ERCP Specialist Melbourne

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is a highly specialised procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreas. Dr Walid Abu Shawish is fellowship-trained in advanced endoscopy with extensive experience performing therapeutic ERCP in complex biliary and pancreatic disease.

What is ERCP?

ERCP combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy (X-ray imaging) to access the bile and pancreatic ducts. It allows both diagnosis and immediate treatment, avoiding the need for major surgery in many cases.

Common conditions treated with ERCP include:

  • Bile duct stones

  • Biliary obstruction or strictures

  • Cholangitis

  • Pancreatic duct narrowing

  • Post-surgical bile leaks

  • Assessment of abnormal liver tests

  • Stent placement for obstruction

Symptoms That May Require ERCP

Patients may be referred for ERCP if they experience:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of eyes/skin)

  • Right upper abdominal pain

  • Fever with biliary infection

  • Unexplained liver enzyme elevation

  • Pancreatitis (certain cases)

  • Dilated bile or pancreatic ducts on ultrasound/CT/MRI

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • Performed in hospital

  • A flexible endoscope is passed into the small intestine

  • Dye contrast is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts

  • Stones can be removed, strictures dilated and stents inserted

  • Typical procedure time: 30–60 minutes

  • Most patients go home the same day or after an overnight stay

Benefits of Specialist ERCP

  • Minimally invasive

  • Immediate treatment during the same procedure

  • Can rapidly relieve pain, jaundice or infection

  • Avoids major surgery for many biliary and pancreatic conditions

  • Performs both diagnosis and therapy in one session
