EUS Specialist Melbourne
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) is a specialised procedure combining endoscopy with high-resolution ultrasound imaging. It provides exceptionally detailed views of the lesions below the mucosa, pancreas, bile ducts and surrounding lymph nodes.
Dr Walid Abu Shawish is fellowship-trained in therapeutic EUS with expertise in the assessment of complex gastrointestinal and pancreatic conditions.
What is EUS?
Unlike external ultrasound, EUS places the ultrasound probe inside the digestive tract, allowing extremely accurate imaging.
EUS can evaluate:
Pancreatic masses or cysts
Bile duct abnormalities
Oesophageal, gastric or duodenal lesions
Submucosal lumps
Enlarged lymph nodes
Staging of GI cancers
EUS can also obtain fine-needle biopsy (FNA) or tissue sampling, allowing early and precise diagnosis.
When Is EUS Recommended?
Common reasons for referral include:
Abnormal CT/MRI showing a pancreatic lesion
Pancreatic cyst surveillance
Dilated bile duct
Suspected stones or strictures
Pancreatitis
Assessment of upper GI subepithelial lesions
Cancer staging before treatment
What to Expect During EUS
Procedure performed under sedation or general anaesthesia
A flexible endoscope with ultrasound probe is passed gently through the mouth
High-resolution images obtained of surrounding organs
Biopsy can be taken during the same procedure if required
Procedure length: 20–45 minutes
You will rest briefly in recovery afterwards
Benefits of Specialist EUS
At times superior detail compared to CT/MRI for many conditions
Can diagnose cancer at an early stage
Enables targeted biopsy
Minimally invasive
Essential for pancreatic and biliary evaluation
After Your EUS
You will receive clear explanations of:
Imaging findings
Whether biopsy was performed
Diagnosis or next steps
Follow-up plan for pancreatic or cyst surveillance
